How do we tangibly grow inclusive teams?

Inclusivity sounds like a great concept, but how can we make it real in team meetings?

True confession: I despise icebreakers. However, starting a meeting with a connector can be a productive tool to build human bonds and help us understand each other.

Bonus: What we learn about each other is often relevant when challenges come up later…and challenges always come up later.

Meeting connectors are just one way that intentional meeting planning can make a world of difference in teamwork.

Two resources have been helpful to leaders and teams I support: a bank of meeting protocols from the National School Reform Faculty and a guide to equitable meetings by the National Equity Project.

This infographic from the National School Reform Faculty defines how protocols help team members learn, connect, and be more productive.

The National Equity Project shares how you can Make the Most of Your Meeting Agenda with these primary actions:

  • Make space for emotion
  • Plan for it
  • Use your imagination
  • Make it an experience
  • But end on a practical note
  • And seek feedback

Fellow leaders and learners, I wish you courage and resilience for the journey.
