Quick Note

How Do Systems Of Oppression Impact Us?

In recent years, dozens of states in the U.S. have proposed or passed bills to silence diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments and learning opportunities. Who do you think this benefits? How do you talk about these things at your workplace?

Structural racism and discrimination are topics that may seem intangible, but their evidence and impact are ever-present, especially obvious to those with marginalized identities.

The Unequal Opportunity Race is a 4-minute video demonstrating anti-Black structural discrimination in the United States. The video was produced by the African American Policy Forum in 2010 and conceived and written by Dr. Kimberlé Crenshaw and Luke Harris.

Banning the truth about difficult topics isn't new. When this video was created, it was banned in schools. Why do you think it was banned? Who is protected by its banning?

What does this video illuminate for you?

Fellow leaders and learners, I wish you courage and resilience for the journey.
